Our one-of-a-kind collection of characterful antique commodes and chests of drawers is mainly concentrated in the 18th century with a few later exceptions from the 19th and 20th centuries. Sourced from established private collections throughout England and Europe, we aspire to offer the very best antique furniture in London.

We have rare English chests of drawers in Walnut and Mahogany from the reign of Queen Anne, George I, II & amp; III. Early 18th-century French walnut has a wonderful mellow colour that takes a sumptuous hand-waxed surface, it is both warm and rich.

Mahogany dominated much of the later 18th century, giving way to the exotic timbers of the Indian subcontinent and beyond in the last years of the 18th century. This is reflected in our collection of pieces circa 1730 – 80.

Thomas Chippendale led the fashion for commodes and cabinet furniture of exquisite designs and outstanding construction. To this day, almost 300 years on you will be able to close a drawer with a single finger, the only resistance being the air that’s forced out.

Meanwhile, on the Continent, a celebration of the most fabulous exotic timbers, gilt bronze mounts and exquisite rare marbles from across Europe, Asia and Africa were building the archive of the Louis XIV – XVI styles that we covert today. Veneered, Lacquer, Marquetry and parquetry commodes and cabinets were made by the finest makers, many of which bear their stamps.

The finest materials are sourced and shipped across the world for thousands of miles to the workshops of Paris & London with little more than horse & cart, sail ships and canals. Rare marbles are cut by hand with a rope.  It is easy to forget in the age of everything, that these pieces were crafted by the most skilled of craftsmen with no mechanical assistance beyond the flow of water mill, the wind, and perseverance.

Nicholas Wells Antiques Proudly offer some of the very finest antique chest of drawers and commodes, selected for their rarity, condition, quality and decorative merit for your interior design schemes.
