Mughal Emerald Green Chandelier

This English twelve-light emerald green glass chandelier dates back to the late 19th century. It was specifically made for the Indian market, reflecting the demand for exquisite and ornate lighting fixtures during that era.

The chandelier features a central stem made of pale green glass, which adds a delicate and elegant touch to the overall design. The stem is adorned with cut crystal drops, enhancing its visual appeal and creating a sparkling effect when illuminated.

Twelve arms extend from the central plate, each equipped with dark green storm shades. These shades not only provide a decorative element but also serve the practical purpose of diffusing the light and creating a softer and more ambient illumination.

The chandelier is in the manner of F. & C. Osler, a renowned English glassmaker known for producing luxurious and elaborate lighting fixtures during the 19th century. In terms of dimensions, the chandelier stands at a height of 48 ½ inches and has a width of 34 5/8 inches. It is a sizable piece, capable of making a grand statement in any interior.

The emerald green glass and the combination of cut crystal drops and dark green storm shades contribute to the chandelier’s opulent and captivating appearance. It embodies the aesthetic preferences of the time and showcases the fusion of English craftsmanship with the demand for luxurious lighting in the Indian market.

This English twelve-light emerald green glass chandelier exemplifies the elegance and sophistication of 19th-century lighting design. Its association with F. & C. Osler further enhances its historical and artistic significance. It is a statement piece that would enhance the ambiance of any interior space, evoking a sense of grandeur and refinement.

In Hinduism, green is often connected with deities like Lord Shiva, who is depicted with green skin, and Lord Krishna, who is associated with nature and forests.
  2. Symbol of Life and Vitality: Green is seen as a life-giving colour and represents vitality and freshness. It is associated with new beginnings, youthfulness, and rejuvenation. In Indian decorative arts, the use of green signifies the flourishing and thriving of life.
  3. Cultural Symbolism: Green is often linked to auspiciousness, luck, and prosperity in Indian culture. It is considered a favorable colour for weddings and festive celebrations. Green is also associated with the harvest season, symbolising a bountiful yield and agricultural prosperity.
  4. Ecological and Environmental Awareness: India has a rich tradition of reverence for nature and an emphasis on environmental conservation. The colour green serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting the natural world. It reflects the deep connection between Indian culture and the environment.

These factors contribute to the significance of green in Indian decorative arts and culture. It is a colour deeply intertwined with spirituality, nature, fertility, and prosperity, and its presence in Indian art and design reflects these cultural beliefs and values.
