Totokia

This 19th century Fijian Totokia War Club, an exceptional piece from the Oceanic, stands as a testament to the era. Known colloquially as the “pineapple club” due to the unique, bulbous shape of its head, which resembles the fruit, this club is a rare find, highlighting the rich tribal heritage of Fiji.

Crafted from the dense root ball of the vesi tree, known for its durability and beautiful grain, the club has acquired a deep, rich patina over time, indicative of its age and the care it has received. The head of the club is finely carved with bands of spikes and central protrusion, with meticulous attention to detail that brings out the natural beauty of the wood and enhances its formidable appearance.

The handle of the Totokia is chased with tavatava, providing both an aesthetic appeal and a practical grip. Traditional tavatava geometric incisions adorn the handle, serving as both decoration and a functional grip enhancement. These intricate patterns are deeply ingrained in Fijian culture, and are seen across the artistic output

The Totokia War Club is not only a weapon but a work of art, embodying the spirit and skill of Fijian warriors. Its distinctive appearance and the craftsmanship it displays make it a highly coveted piece for collectors and enthusiasts of Oceanic art and weaponry.

This war club is a remarkable piece that would stand out in any collection, offering a tangible link to the past and a striking example of Fijian warrior culture. It is a symbol of power, artistry, and the enduring legacy of the Oceanic peoples.
