Mahogany Bergere Armchairs

These stunning mahogany bergeres from the 19th century Austrian Empire period are exemplary pieces that showcase the grandeur and elegance of the Empire style, which was heavily influenced by the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Design and Characteristics

  1. Square Chamfered Backs: The bergeres feature square chamfered backs, a characteristic element that adds to their imposing presence. The backs are enriched with bold pierced flutes, which provide a sense of depth and texture, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship.
  2. Arm Supports and Pommels: The arms of the chairs terminate in column supports, which are not only structural but also decorative. These supports are accented with brass sabots, small protective and decorative fittings that add a touch of sophistication. The arms culminate in carved helmet pommels, a distinctive and elegant detail that exemplifies the neoclassical inspiration of the period.
  3. Outswept Back Legs: The outswept back legs contribute to the overall aesthetic of stability and grace. This design choice reflects the functional and stylistic preferences of the Empire period, ensuring both visual appeal and structural integrity.

Historical Context and Usage

The Empire style, prevalent during the early 19th century, was a direct reflection of the political and cultural ambitions of Napoleon’s regime. The style drew heavily on classical antiquity, aiming to evoke the splendour and authority of ancient Roman and Greek civilisations.

  • Symbolism and Influence: The use of classical motifs and robust forms in furniture design was intended to convey power and permanence. The bold, structured design elements found in these bergeres are typical of the Empire style, which sought to create a sense of grandeur and imperial majesty.
  • Materials and Craftsmanship: Mahogany was a favoured material during this period for its durability and beautiful grain. The incorporation of brass and detailed carvings demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship and the luxurious standards of the time.
