Van Bergh Silver Plate Cocktail Shaker -

Cocktail Shaker

This distinctive piece is an American Art Deco novelty cocktail shaker, creatively designed in the form of a bell, complete with an ebonized handle that adds a touch of elegance and contrast to its overall appearance. The Art Deco movement, known for its embrace of modernity and stylized forms, is perfectly encapsulated in this unique shaker, which combines functionality with the period’s characteristic flair for design.

The cocktail shaker is marked on the base with the signature of the Van Bergh Silver Plate Co., a notable firm based in Rochester, NY. The Van Bergh Silver Plate Co. was established in 1892 and quickly gained a reputation for its quality silver-plated ware, contributing to the era’s burgeoning market for luxury and decorative household items. In 1926, in a significant industry move, Van Bergh Silver Plate Co. merged into Oneida Community Limited, marking the end of its independent operations but cementing its legacy in American silver history.

This cocktail shaker not only serves as a functional barware item but also as a collector’s piece that reflects the artistic and industrial heritage of early 20th-century America. Its design and craftsmanship speak to a time when cocktail culture was in its infancy, and items like this were at the forefront of social gatherings and the prohibition era’s speakeasy scene. The ebonised handle provides a striking visual and tactile contrast to the silver-plated bell body, illustrating the era’s penchant for combining different materials and textures to achieve a sophisticated, modern look.
