Description

A rare mid 18th century antique George II giltwood overmantel mirror, in Thomas Chippendale’s Chinoiserie Chinese Rococo style. The carved and water gilt frame with oriental chinoiserie inspired ornament including a pagoda housing a Chinaman at the top above rockwork, sprays of foliage and flowers within C and S rococo scrolls. The mirror has three plates on each side separated by vertical pilasters and flanking the central mirror split plates.

Chippendale Designs

Having written his Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director, published in 1754, Thomas Chippendale circulated his designs throughout the country and beyond. The Chippendale style became sought after by the country’s elites. Below, is a design of a rococo mirror from The Director within the Metropolitan Museum’s collection in New York. Here, we can see the similarities between this design and our mirror – the detailed and sculptural carving is particularly impressive.
