By repute this wide commode is a type known as a “pantaloniere”. The idea being that it was wide enough for trousers to laid full length along each drawer.

A large scale provincial oak three drawer French pantaloniere commode. The top has a simple moulding echoed around the drawers. At the base there is a shaped frieze and the whole stands on short cabriole legs.
