These fabulous vases are made from a Derbyshire Spar. Those who worked Blue John developed a method of lightening the stone by heating it. This was achieved by covering the stone in Sand. If this is done carefully dark stone will lighten in shade and the colour will shift towards the red end of the spectrum, however, with increased heat the colour bleaches out almost totally but material which contains some Iron will retain & even develop an orange tint. Derbyshire Spar is incredibly difficult to work, due to its fractious nature, finding a pair of this size & with this almost unique figuration is extraordinarily uncommon.

Two grand classical vases sculpted from the rarest of stones.
