Description
This rose medallion porcelain punch bowl dates to the late 19th century. This pattern was one of the most popular ever produced and the quality of Rose medallion porcelain pieces varies considerably. The early pieces such as this punch bowl are by far the more superior.
The decorative Rose Medallion scheme is based on a central medallion. Bordered by foliate details and alternating reserve panels of flora, fauna with birds and conversation pieces around the base of the bowl. As the sides flare, the panels increase to six on the inside and another six on the outside.
The whole piece and all decorative panels are bordered with vivid green fauna and rich crimson peony flowers and also picked out with gold.
The early Rose Medallion porcelains such as this punch bowl were not marked. Later pieces after 1890 bore the marks CHINA / MADE IN CHINA / or modern ones with spurious stamps.
