19th Century Carved Green Marble Warwick Vase


  • Modeled after an ancient Roman marble vase discovered at Hadrians Villa, Tivoli, circa 1771
  • The original was discovered by Gavin Hamilton, he was a Scottish antique dealer based in Rome, he was also an artist and antiquarian
  • Hamilton sold the vase to Sir William Hamilton, who in turn sold it to George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick
  • It is now housed in the Burrell Collection, Scotland
  • The Warwick vase was one of the most sought after Grand Tour Souvenirs
  • It is seen in marble, serpentine, alabaster, cast iron, and bronze
  • This version by an unknown sculptor shows exceptional carving and unusual quality of detail

A fine 19th or 20th century carved serpentine marble edition of the famous Warick discovered at Hadrians Villa, Tivoli, by Gavin Hamilton in 1771. This vase is particularly fine in its carving and sharp details depicting classical bacchic satires and profile busts amongst vines and lion pelts.
