This marble head represents a youthful Alexander the Great, the man who almost single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in little over a decade.

The legendary king, commander, politician, scholar and explorer founded over 70 cities and created an empire that stretched across three continents and covered around two million square miles. At the age of just 25 he became king of Macedonia, leader of the Greeks, overlord of Asia Minor, pharaoh of Egypt and ‘Great King’ of Persia.

The present work originates from the Roman Imperial period around the 1st – 2nd century A.D. when Alexander and his legendary military achievements were still highly revered by the conquering and ambitious Roman’s who sought to build an empire to surpass even that of the great Macedonian.

One can clearly identify the subject of the bust as Alexander by his general facial physiognomy, but more specifically by the appearance of his thick, long-cropped wavy hair and his famed ‘quiff’ that is parted slightly at the centre.
