Carved ornament in the decorative and fine arts

Carving wood or other materials is a process that requires skill and patience. It begins with selecting the right material for the project. The material should be free of cracks and knots, and should be of the right size and shape. Once the material is selected, the next step is to draw the design onto the material. This can be done with a pencil, a marker, or a template.

After the design is drawn, the carver begins to shape the material using a variety of tools, such as chisels, gouges, and knives. The carver carefully removes material to create the desired shape. As the shape is refined, the carver may use shark skin to smooth the surface. Finally, the carver may finish the piece with a coat of varnish or wax to protect it.

Carving is a technique required for many disciplines in the decorative arts including furniture production, mirror frames, objects, and sculpture.
