Pair of early 18th century Japanese part glazed cobalt blue and white vases and covers deliberately left unfinished. Each with elaborate tops with mythical Temple Lions.

These vases, characterised by their part-glazed cobalt blue and white appearance, remain notably unfinished. Each vase is adorned with elaborate tops featuring mythical Temple Lions, offering a glimpse into the rich symbolism of Japanese art. Intriguingly, the underglazed areas of these vases were intended to be later decorated in either Japan or Europe with lacquer or enamel, a practice highlighting the collaborative nature of art during this period. This decoration would have resulted in a ground of flowers within polychrome reserves, as per the clobber artists’ choice.
