Siberian amethyst, renowned for its deep, rich purple colour and exceptional clarity, has long been coveted by gem enthusiasts and artisans alike. This particularly vibrant variety of amethyst is so named because it was historically sourced from the mines in the Ural Mountains of Siberia in Russia.

In the decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, Siberian amethyst was highly esteemed and often incorporated into a variety of ornate works. It was a time of opulence and aesthetic grandeur, and gemstones, including amethyst, played a crucial role in the creation of luxurious pieces that reflected the tastes and wealth of the era.

During the 18th century, Siberian amethyst was a popular choice in the creation of intricate jewelry pieces, including brooches, necklaces, earrings, and rings. Its intense purple hue was particularly prized as it was believed to symbolise royalty and power, making it a favorite amongst nobility and high society. Moreover, the use of Siberian amethyst was not limited to personal adornment but extended to decorative items like snuff boxes, watch cases, and even religious artifacts.

In the 19th century, during the Victorian era, the fascination with Siberian amethyst continued. It was commonly used in both fine jewelry and in decorative household objects. This period saw a rise in 'Grand Tour' souvenirs, and pieces featuring Siberian amethysts were sought after by wealthy tourists traveling through Europe. The popularity of Siberian amethyst also extended to the Russian royal family, with Fabergé, the famous Russian jeweler, frequently incorporating it into his renowned Fabergé eggs.

Although the original Siberian mines are mostly depleted today, the term 'Siberian amethyst' is still used within the gemstone trade to refer to amethyst of similar quality and colour to those originally mined in Siberia. Therefore, the legacy of Siberian amethysts from the 18th and 19th centuries endures, encapsulating the beauty and elegance of these past eras.
