Silversmithing is the skilled art of transforming silver into both functional and decorative objects. From ecclesiastical chalices and domestic tableware to intricate jewellery and ceremonial pieces, silverwork has long held cultural and artistic value.

Materials and Alloys

  • The primary material is sterling silver, composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper, offering both lustre and durability.
  • Raw silver is shaped as sheet, wire or ingots, depending on the intended technique.

Key Processes in Silversmithing

1. Design and Planning

  • Craftsmen begin with technical drawings or prototypes.
  • Designs may incorporate traditional motifs, heraldic symbols or modern stylings.

2. Annealing

  • Annealing involves heating the silver to a controlled temperature to soften it.
  • This process reduces internal stress caused by hammering or bending, making the metal more workable.
  • Repeated annealing is necessary during forming stages to prevent cracking.

3. Forming and Shaping

  • Raising: transforming flat sheet into hollow forms through incremental hammering.
  • Forging: shaping silver by striking with hammers.
  • Spinning: using a lathe to form symmetrical objects like bowls or candlesticks.

4. Joining and Assembly

  • Components are joined using silver solder, flux and heat.
  • Riveting or fusing may be used for structural or decorative connections.

5. Surface Decoration

  • Techniques include:
    • Engraving: incising lines or patterns.
    • Chasing and Repoussé: working the metal from front and back to create relief.
    • Piercing: sawing patterns to produce openwork designs.
    • Enamelling: fusing coloured glass onto the metal surface.

6. Finishing and Polishing

  • Abrasives and polishing compounds are applied to create desired surface finishes—satin, gloss or mirror.
  • Burnishing enhances shine by compressing the surface with smooth tools.

Hallmarking and Regulation

  • In the United Kingdom, hallmarking is legally required for silver items above specified weights.
  • Assay offices test for purity and mark each piece with standardised symbols.

7. Electroplating

Electroplating is a process by which a thin layer of silver is deposited onto the surface of a base metal—typically nickel, copper or brass—using an electric current. While traditional silversmithing involves solid silver components, electroplating emerged in the 19th century as a cost-effective method for producing silvered objects that retained the visual qualities of sterling silver.

8. Niello

Niello is a decorative technique in which a black mixture—typically made from sulphur, copper, silver, and lead—is inlaid into engraved designs on a silver surface. Once the incised patterns are filled, the piece is fired to fuse the niello into place, then polished to a smooth, lustrous finish where the dark composition contrasts sharply with the gleaming metal. Popular throughout Europe from the Renaissance to the 18th century, niello was used on small objects such as snuff boxes, knife handles, jewellery and ecclesiastical items. In British silversmithing, it offered an alternative to enamel or engraving alone, allowing for intricate pictorial scenes, scrolling ornament and heraldic devices to be highlighted with dramatic effect. Though less common than other forms of embellishment, niello-work remains prized for its graphic clarity and historical mystique.

9. Silver Gilt - Vermeille

Vermeil — or vermeille in French — is a luxurious metal finish often used in antique jewelry, objets d’art, and fine tableware. It combines the rich appearance of gold with the structure of silver, offering a high-end alternative to solid gold pieces.

✨ What Is Vermeil?

Vermeil refers specifically to:

  • A base of solid sterling silver

  • Overlaid with a thick layer of pure or fine gold (usually 10k or higher)

  • Traditionally applied via fire gilding (historic method)
