Spotlight on BADA: The British Antique Dealers’ Association and Leading Dealers
As part of our series on the world of antiques and the antique market, Nicholas Wells Antiques is delighted to present specialist blogs on major fairs, distinguished dealers, and the leading organisations and associations that shape the industry. Among these, the British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) holds a preeminent position.
BADA – A Mark of Excellence
Founded in 1918, BADA is one of the world’s most respected antique dealer associations, representing around 350 international dealers, galleries, and antique shops. Membership is awarded only to those who meet a rigorous vetting process, ensuring integrity, expertise, and outstanding inventories. BADA dealers are recognised leaders in their fields, placing works in important museum collections worldwide. In an increasingly global antiques market, the BADA name remains synonymous with craftsmanship, quality, and professional integrity.
Leading BADA Dealers
BADA’s members include some of the most fascinating and accomplished dealers, spanning a wide range of specialisms: from arms and armour to Asian art, from 18th-century furniture to 20th-century design. Below, we highlight some of the most admired names.
Arms & Armour
The Armoury, St. James’s – Specialists in royal, naval, military and political history, with an outstanding inventory ranging from the Napoleonic wars to the mid-20th century. Objects include ceremonial and royal presentation items linked to figures such as Churchill, Nelson, and Wellington. The Armoury is frequently consulted by auction houses and institutions for its expertise.
Peter Finer Ltd – For over 40 years, Peter Finer has led the field of antique arms and armour, offering extraordinary swords, daggers, pistols, shields, helmets, and suits of armour. Finer’s pieces are represented in major institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Army Museum.
Unusual Inventories & Artistic Vision
3Details Ltd (Peter Woodward) – Specialising in 20th-century design, antiques, and fine art, Peter Woodward brings an artist’s training and over 20 years of business experience. Based in Oxfordshire, 3Details regularly exhibits at the BADA Fair, the Decorative Arts Fair, and LAPADA Fair.
Spencer Swaffer Antiques – Established in 1973, Spencer Swaffer is renowned for a glamorous, eclectic sensibility and an extraordinary eye. Widely respected as a “dealer’s dealer,” his handpicked English and European antiques are highly coveted by private clients and designers worldwide.
George Baker Asian Art – Located in Kensington, George Baker is internationally recognised for Edo-period Japanese screens, Meiji artworks, Buddhist art, lacquerware, cloisonné, scholar’s objects, and post-war Japanese fine art. The gallery also offers important works from China and Korea, and is a trusted source for museums and institutions worldwide.
Furniture & Decorative Arts
Adrian Allan Gallery – Established in 1964 and based in Mayfair, Adrian Allan is one of the world’s leading dealers in antique English and continental furniture. The gallery is known for its vast inventory of fine furniture, chandeliers, mirrors, porcelain, and statuary, serving both private collectors and museums.
Godson & Coles – With over 30 years’ experience, Godson & Coles specialises in 17th–early 19th century English furniture and mid-20th century British art, particularly the St. Ives School. Founder Richard Coles has served as BADA chairman and sits on vetting committees for major fairs such as Masterpiece and the BADA Fair.
James Brett Antiques – A family business dating back to 1860, James Brett represents five generations of expertise. Today based in Norwich, Brett offers an eclectic mix of English and Continental furnishings, sculpture, and decorative works, all curated with discerning taste.
Thomas Coulborn & Sons – Established in 1930, Thomas Coulborn & Sons specialises in 18th–19th century English and Continental furniture, gilt mirrors, and fine art. Jonathan Coulborn has placed important works in international museums and regularly lectures on historic furniture. The gallery has exhibited at Masterpiece, the BADA Fair, and Grosvenor House Antiques Fair (Gold Medal, Object of the Year 2009).
