Vintage Dunhill Lighter Collection : In Focus
Nicholas Wells Antiques is delighted to announce the acquisition of an exclusive Vintage Dunhill Lighter Collection. Synonymous with 20th-century style, glamour, and refinement, Dunhill has long been one of the most recognisable names in luxury men’s accessories. It is no surprise, therefore, that vintage Dunhill lighters remain among the most sought-after collectibles today.
The History of Dunhill
In 1893, Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s London saddlery and quickly adapted the business to meet the needs of the growing motoring age. He introduced a line of accessories called “Dunhill’s Motorities”—including goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats. Within a few years, Dunhill had opened two Mayfair shops and published a catalogue featuring over 1,300 items, firmly establishing the brand as a leader in men’s luxury lifestyle goods.
In 1904–5, Dunhill created the “Windshield Pipe”, designed to protect smokers from the wind while driving—an innovation that marked the company’s transition from motoring accessories to smoking ephemera. By 1907, Dunhill had opened its first tobacconist on Duke Street, Mayfair, strategically located near the city’s most prestigious gentlemen’s clubs.
Following the First World War, the brand expanded internationally, opening flagship stores in New York and Paris. In 1927, Dunhill introduced the “Unique Lighter”, the world’s first lighter that could be operated with just one hand—a true innovation that cemented the company’s reputation for style, engineering, and quality.
