WHAT IS AN ANTIQUE TORCHERE?
Antique Torcheres — Light, Elegance, and Symmetry
Historically, the primary purpose of an antique torchre was to hold candlelit candelabras, providing essential illumination in grand interiors. Given this important role, their designs were often rich, varied, and highly decorative, blending function with artistry.
These floor-standing light stands were traditionally placed singly or, more often, as a pair to create symmetry and frame a space — flanking a doorway, positioned on either side of a commode, or set beneath a giltwood mirror to reflect the warm candlelight.
Like our antique pedestal columns, the finest early torchres were crafted from exceptional materials. Favoured woods included fine imported mahogany, rich ebony, and satinwood, chosen for their ability to take crisp carving and intricate detailing. Such designs were often the work of master craftsmen like Thomas Chippendale and his 18th-century contemporaries, whose creations balanced lightness of form with structural refinement.
When paired with period commodes, gilt mirrors, or elegant seating, antique torchres elevate an interior scheme — adding balance, height, and a sense of timeless sophistication. They are as much decorative statements as they are practical lighting supports.
At Nicholas Wells Antiques, we are proud to offer some of the finest examples of antique pedestal columns and torchres, carefully selected for their rarity, condition, quality, and decorative merit. These pieces bring heritage and distinction to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
