A superb pair of George III giltwood armchairs, attributed to the celebrated English cabinet-maker John Linnell, epitomises refined late eighteenth-century design. Crafted circa 1780, these armchairs embody the classical elegance and decorative mastery characteristic of the period.

Origin: England

Date: Circa 1780

Material: Giltwood, green silk velvet upholstery

Dimensions: Height: 98 cm (38.6 in); Width: 61 cm (24 in); Depth: 66 cm (26 in)

Condition: Fine, minor wear consistent with age; retains excellent patina

The Linnell firm stood at the forefront of eighteenth-century English furniture making, undertaking commissions for some of the country’s grandest estates. Influenced by leading tastes of the period and the renowned designer Robert Adam, Linnell championed a move towards Neoclassicism, infusing his creations with both elegance and restraint. His armchairs, including exemplars such as these, often display the same sophisticated lines and ornament seen in major museum collections, rivalled only by contemporaries like Thomas Chippendale.

Notable Features:

  • Exquisite giltwood carving, with intricate honeysuckle motifs and shot mouldings
  • Distinctive tied ribbon and patera cresting to the padded giltwood-framed back
  • Refined tapered and fluted front legs, splayed rear legs for elegant stance
  • Beautifully upholstered in green silk velvet, enhancing period authenticity

These George III armchairs are significant examples of late 18th-century English seating, with their Neoclassical references and the fashionable Louis XVI influence apparent in Linnell’s work. Their delicate yet robust construction, combined with graceful curves and harmonious form, set them apart as quintessential pieces for any collection of Georgian furniture.

Highly sought after for their rarity and documented connection to one of England’s most important cabinet-makers, these giltwood armchairs are particularly desirable. Their form and scale make them versatile, suitable for both display as centrepieces and use within a stylish period or contemporary interior. This pair provides both exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design, an ideal addition for discerning collectors or interiors enthusiasts seeking notable examples of English armchairs.
