A striking pair of Regency pier or console tables, dating from the early 19th century, epitomises the refined style and superior craftsmanship of English furniture. These antique tables seamlessly merge elegant form with ornamental opulence, representing a pinnacle of Regency design sensibility.

Origin: England

Date: Circa 1810

Material: Mahogany, ebony, gilt bronze

Dimensions: Height: 104 cm (41 ins); Width: 66 cm (26 ins); Depth: 42.5 cm (16.75 ins)

Condition: Excellent patina, minor sympathetic restorations

These console tables are an outstanding example of the Regency period’s fascination with classical antiquity, blending richly figured mahogany with contrasting ebonised sides and lustrous gilt bronze mounts. Influenced by the grandeur of Ancient Rome and Greece, their aesthetic finds parallels in the finest collections, echoing works housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum and renowned country houses. The tables’ impressive scale and detail would have made them highly desirable features in any elegant Regency interior, accentuating light and space when positioned before a pier glass or mirror.

Notable Features:

  • Exquisite craftsmanship, with high-relief classical carving on both outer and inner scrolled monopodial legs
  • Decorative friezes embellished with egg and dart mouldings and finely chased, gilt bronze mounts
  • Sculptural lion paw feet and shaped stepped bases, each with a shaped central apron, lend further gravitas and distinction to the design
  • Original mirror plates inset in the backs to enhance ambient light and create a sense of space

The tall, stately form and richly detailed ornamentation of these console tables perfectly capture the Regency taste for harmonious proportions and classical references. The use of ebonised and gilt detailing enhances the tables’ visual impact, while the motif of monopodial legs and zoomorphic lion feet references the era’s revivalist spirit.

Rarely encountered as an original pair, these Regency pier tables are highly prized by collectors, interior designers and connoisseurs alike. Their exceptional scale, decorative appeal, and distinguished provenance ensure they remain a versatile centrepiece—ideal for grand entrances, salons, or sophisticated contemporary settings. Whether employed for display or as a focal point in a gracious room, these console tables are an investment in historic style and enduring craftsmanship.
