Leader’s early works were distinctly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, noted for their meticulous detail and the practice of painting outdoors, directly from nature. As his career progressed, he evolved towards a more impressionistic style, which deviated from precise natural depiction. This shift garnered greater acclaim and popularity.
In 1871, critic James Dafforne remarked in *The Art Journal* on Leader’s nuanced artistic approach:
“He exhibits a keen appreciation for nature’s diverse beauty, infused with a poetic sensibility. Leader strikes a balance, avoiding both overly meticulous detail and the overly brisk execution. His paintings are finished enough to appease those who value precision yet avoid slipping into unnecessary minutiae. They achieve a broad, striking impact through skillful use of light and shade, and his color palette remains pure and true to nature.”
