Bertel Thorvaldsen was a renowned Danish sculptor and a leading figure of the Neoclassical movement. Born in Copenhagen, he achieved international acclaim for his monumental works inspired by the art and ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. Thorvaldsen spent much of his career in Rome, where he was celebrated as a modern master of classical sculpture.

His works are characterised by their idealised forms, graceful compositions, and serene beauty, embodying the Neoclassical emphasis on harmony and proportion. Masterpieces such as *Christus* and *The Apostles* (in Copenhagen’s Vor Frue Kirke) and *Jason with the Golden Fleece* demonstrate his technical brilliance and ability to convey both strength and spiritual calm.

Thorvaldsen’s legacy extends beyond his sculptures. As a patron and cultural figure, he played a key role in the development of European art during his time. His works remain highly regarded, and the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen, dedicated to his life and art, stand s as a testament to his enduring influence.
