Flemish Wall Mirror

This distinguished Flemish wall mirror dates to the mid-19th century and epitomises the ornate design sensibilities characteristic of its era. Showcasing impressive brass craftsmanship, it reflects the period’s fascination with rich decorative detail and symbolic motif, making it a striking accent for any refined interior.

Origin: Holland, Netherlands
Date: Circa 1850
Material: Embossed brass with additional tole and leather elements

Dimensions: Height: 104 cm (41 in); Width: 70 cm (27.5 in)

Condition: Fine antique condition with well-preserved patina and only minor, age-appropriate surface wear.

This antique mirror draws upon influences from grand Flemish interiors, where such ornately decorated wall mirrors were favoured as both functional and decorative features. The use of embossed brass and mythological motifs is reminiscent of pieces found in prominent European collections and museum holdings, evoking the opulence of the 19th-century Low Countries. Similar mirrors have been associated with celebrated Dutch and Flemish craftsmen, admired for their lively forms and intricate metalwork.

Notable Features:

  • Embossed brass decoration covering the frame, showcasing high-relief craftsmanship and intricate detailing.
  • A boldly designed crest featuring a central vase, flanked by hippocampi and classical cornucopia, highlights the influence of both mythological and natural forms popular in Flemish decorative arts of the time.
  • The mirror’s unique combination of materials—brass, tole, and leather—demonstrates both technical versatility and aesthetic appeal, elevating it above more commonplace mirrors of the 19th century.
  • Owing to its generous scale and richly ornamented style, this mirror is particularly desirable among collectors of antique mirrors and those seeking to introduce a focal point with historical gravitas to their homes.

With its rarity and authentic Flemish design, this antique wall mirror offers substantial collecting value as well as striking decorative potential. It is ideally suited for display in formal spaces, period interiors, or as a sophisticated statement in contemporary settings, reinforcing its enduring appeal as a choice example of 19th-century European craftsmanship.
