This exquisite Regency flame mahogany set of shelves epitomises early nineteenth-century English cabinet furniture, reflecting the refined aesthetic and expert craftsmanship of the Regency period. With its striking architectural silhouette and sophisticated use of high-quality materials, it stands as an excellent example of the era’s celebrated style.

Origin: England

Date: Circa 1810

Material: Flame mahogany, with brass wire panels and brass castors

Dimensions: Height: 80 cm (31.5 in), Width: 91 cm (35.8 in), Depth: 38 cm (15 in)

Condition: Excellent patina; original brass fittings; minimal signs of age

This elegant piece is distinguished by its use of highly figured flame mahogany, a favoured material among Regency cabinetmakers for its vivid grain and rich colouring. Comparable examples can be found in fine stately homes and museum collections such as the V&A, where similar designs showcase the period’s shift towards classical proportion and ornamentation. The presence of stylised Tuscan Doric columns and original brass detailing sets this set of shelves apart, linking it to the refined tastes of Regency England.

Notable Features:

  • Exceptional craftsmanship displayed in the perfectly moulded shelf fronts and sides, alongside meticulously turned Tuscan Doric columns
  • Design significance rests in the harmonious balance of classical inspiration and elegant simplicity, with bold sunken paw feet on brass castors lending a grounded yet mobile presence
  • Brass wire end panels enhance visual delicacy whilst providing structural integrity, a feature rarely retained in original pieces
  • Highly collectible for its authenticity and rarity, especially considering the survival of all original components and its desirable scale
  • Equally suited to use as a bookcase, display for decorative objects, or as a statement piece in a refined interior

This Regency flame mahogany set of shelves offers both beauty and practicality, seamlessly fitting into traditional or contemporary settings. Its quality, provenance, and timeless design make it a superb addition to any collection of cabinet furniture, or a striking focal point in the home.
