This is a rare Flemish ebonised ripple frame mirror, which boasts exceptional depth and detail. Measuring 90cm in height and 84cm in width, this Dutch Black Ebonised Ripple Molded Mirror is a true masterpiece.
Ripple moldings, the technique used to create the frame of this mirror, were first developed in Germany in the early 17th century for frames and furniture. The process involves using a pattern and follower system to duplicate a waveform onto a stock piece. Joseph Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises of 1678–80 includes a well-known engraving and description of the technique.
