A rare mid-18th century Chippendale mirror, adorned with intricate detailing throughout. It features elegant ‘C’ scrolls and inset carved leaves, surrounded by stiff leaf decorations at the top. The pierced sides are embellished with intertwined flora, acanthus leaves, and foliage, with a central carved flower on each side of the plate. The mirror retains its original plate, and the gesso on the frame has been meticulously restored to its original condition. Traces of the gesso and gilding are visible across the frame. The open scrolls on the apron are accented with a pendant rocaille coronet and leaf decoration, completing the scrollwork.

This mirror epitomises the Rococo style that flourished in England during the mid-18th century, a period marked by an increasing taste for luxury and ornate aesthetics. The Rococo movement, known for its playful elegance and intricate designs, influenced many aspects of decorative arts, including furniture and mirrors. Thomas Chippendale, a leading figure of this era, blended Rococo’s fluid forms with his distinctive craftsmanship, resulting in pieces that were both functional and highly decorative.
