A fine and early pair of English fireplace bellows, notable for their richly japanned red surface and beautifully executed gilt decoration. The front board is adorned with a raised circular boss centring a radiating gilt motif, surrounded by delicate gilt floral and foliate sprays in the manner of Giles Grendey, whose workshop was celebrated for its luxurious japanned furniture.

England, circa 1740

The bellows retain their original characterful details, including rows of brass studs securing the leather sides and a turned brass nozzle at the tapered end. The reverse handle bears a slender leather strap for hanging when not in use—an elegant and practical touch typical of early 18th-century domestic metalwork and japanned wares.

Comparable examples can be found in major collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (e.g. walnut and japanned bellows with brass nozzle, accession no. O118301), illustrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with early 18th century utilitarian objects.

A decorative and increasingly rare survival from the early 18th century.
