An early 19th century four fold Chinese lacquer screen – Room Divider

This striking early 19th-century room divider epitomises the artistry of Chinese lacquerware from the Qing Dynasty, blending intricate polychrome decoration with a practical folding form. Displaying cityscape scenes on one side and exotic birds on the other, its balance of beauty and utility is characteristic of fine coromandel lacquer work.

Origin: China

Date: Circa 1800

Material: Polychrome coromandel lacquer

Dimensions: Height: 183 cm (72 ins), Width per panel: 61 cm (24 ins); Total width opened: 244 cm (96 ins)

Condition: Excellent antique condition with a pleasing patina, minor signs of age commensurate with period.

This early Chinese screen situates perfectly among historic examples of coromandel lacquer in museum collections worldwide, admired for their elaborate surface decoration and functional elegance. Comparable pieces are highly prized in both domestic and institutional settings, reflecting a fascination in the West for Chinoiserie and oriental exotica during the Regency and Victorian eras. The screen’s cityscape, framed by vignettes of auspicious symbols and a floral border, demonstrates the narrative and symbolic richness favoured during this period, whilst the reverse featuring exquisite birds showcases the delicate brushwork and mastery of lacquer technique.

Notable Features:

  • Exceptional craftsmanship apparent in the hand-applied polychrome lacquer, with each panel featuring unique landscape and avian motifs.
  • The design offers strong references to the opulence of Qing Dynasty aesthetics, combining refined cityscape scenes with the serenity of natural bird imagery.
  • Distinctive layout with a framed central panel and auspicious symbols conveys layers of meaning, traditionally believed to bestow prosperity and good fortune.
  • Rare to find in such a well-preserved state, it serves as both a decorative centrepiece and a collectable example of early 19th-century Chinese room dividers.

This folding screen is not only an exquisite piece for display in refined interiors or period collections, but also practical for dividing large spaces or creating intimate alcoves. It would enhance any design scheme, making it a highly desirable acquisition for connoisseurs of Chinese decorative arts and those seeking historically significant room dividers.
