Carved Giltwood Eagle & Ebonised Column

A magnificent testament to nineteenth-century craftsmanship, this carved and giltwood eagle sculpture exemplifies the era’s fascination with naturalistic forms and dramatic compositions. Its dynamic presentation captures the spirit of the Gothic Revival style, prevalent in Britain during this period, celebrating both might and elegance.

Origin: England
Date: Circa 1880
Material: Giltwood, silvered gilt, and ebonised wood

Dimensions: Height: 236 cm (93 ins), Height of Stand: 95 cm (37.5 ins), Width: 70 cm (27.6 ins), Depth: 45 cm (17.7 ins)

Condition: Excellent overall, with superb patina and minor, sympathetic restorations consistent with age.

This remarkable wooden sculpture stands as an exceptional example of Victorian decorative arts, reminiscent of works held in esteemed museum collections. Notably, Gothic Revival sculptures from this era often feature such attention to movement and anatomical realism, reflecting influences from both British and Continental artists. Its grand scale and sense of narrative drama place it amongst the most compelling decorative sculptures of the late nineteenth century.

Notable Features:

  • Superb Craftsmanship:
Exquisite hand-carved detail is evident in the eagle’s outstretched wings, expressive talons, and the fur of the captured hare, testifying to the artisan’s skill. The two tone gilding enhances the scene’s liveliness, while the ebonised rocks add depth and contrast.

  • Striking Design:
The composition masterfully balances power and vulnerability, with the eagle’s dynamic pose set atop a meticulously crafted, gilded and ebonised column. Silver gilt accents add refinement and highlight the sculptural form’s neoclassical references.

  • Collectible Value:
Large-scale carved and giltwood sculptures of this calibre and period are increasingly scarce, offering discerning collectors a rare opportunity. Its commanding presence and distinguished styling make it a valuable addition to any serious art or decorative wood sculpture collection.

  • Versatility for Display:
With its dramatic height and expertly finished column, this giltwood eagle is ideally suited as a focal point for grand entrance halls, drawing rooms, or curated sculpture displays. The piece readily complements both period interiors and more modern settings, ensuring lasting aesthetic appeal.

This Carved Giltwood Eagle & Ebonised Column offers a harmonious blend of 19th-century artistry, collectible rarity, and visual impact—an exemplary choice for those seeking unique antique sculptures and statues for their home or collection.
