Antique Baltic Armchair Seized During the Crimean War

A striking example of early 19th-century seating, this antique Baltic armchair melds Continental craftsmanship with a captivating wartime provenance. With Regency influences evident in its design, this chair is not only a sophisticated furnishing but also a remarkable historical artefact.

Origin: Baltic Region
Date: Circa 1830
Material: Walnut veneer, leather

Dimensions: Height: 94 cm (37 in); Width: 54 cm (21 in); Depth: 64 cm (25 in)

Condition: Good with a lovely patina; minor wear consistent with age.

This Regency armchair is a rare survivor from the tumultuous era of the Crimean War. Bearing an inscription that commemorates its seizure from the Redan at Sebastopol by Major George Ranken of the Royal Engineers on 8th September 1855, it stands as a tangible witness to a pivotal episode in 19th-century history. Comparable to examples in European decorative arts collections, this piece bridges the gap between functional seating and meaningful historical memento, echoing the tastes and turbulence of the period. Such pieces, especially those linked to major historical events, have attracted attention from collectors and are found in notable museum holdings.

Notable Features:

  • Finely shaped walnut veneer gives the chair an elegant surface, enhanced by a gentle patina developed over nearly two centuries.
  • Curved back, scroll arms, and sabre legs reflect the refined Regency style, balancing comfort with stylish proportions.
  • Drop-in leather seat provides both support and a touch of luxury, typical of high-quality antique armchairs.
  • Inscribed back panel uniquely documents its provenance, marking it as a trophy taken from Sebastopol during the Crimean War by a distinguished British officer.

This antique armchair captivates both as a decorative highlight and a collector’s treasure. Its well-proportioned form makes it suitable as a centrepiece in a period interior, a standout addition to any Regency furniture collection, or as the foundation of a display focused on military history. The authentic provenance and distinctive design ensure its lasting value, making it a desirable acquisition for discerning collectors of antique seating.
