The Pitchford Hall Dining Chairs (8+2)

A rare and important set, these mid-19th century barley twist oak dining chairs embody the height of Victorian craftsmanship and stately English heritage. Boasting their original, individually hand-embroidered needlework seats and backs, these chairs exemplify refined style and noble provenance, having been designed exclusively for the renowned Elizabethan manor, Pitchford Hall.

Origin: England
Date: Circa 1840–1845
Material: Oak, original armorial needlework

Dimensions:
Carvers — Height: 112 cm (44 in); Width: 67 cm (26.3 in); Depth: 62 cm (24.5 in)

Condition: Excellent, with original patina; minor restorations consistent with age

This distinguished set of dining room chairs reflects the rich traditions of English country house interiors during the early Victorian era. The use of barley twist turnings references a long lineage of British joinery, while the bespoke embroidered upholstery showcases an extraordinary personal touch, with several seats signed and dated by members of the Ottley family, including one notably inscribed ‘Worked by Lady Milton’. Comparable examples can be found in national collections, yet this set stands alone with its documented association to England’s finest half-timbered manor.

Notable Features:

  • Superb barley twist carving throughout, displaying the hallmarks of 19th-century English seating
  • Each chair features a wholly unique armorial motif in the needlework, underscoring the custom-made nature of the suite
  • Historical and aesthetic significance due to its creation for Pitchford Hall, one of England’s pre-eminent Elizabethan houses
  • Distinguished provenance: many seats signed and dated by Ottley family members, enhancing both collecting and display value
  • Two grand carvers and eight side chairs, well suited to a formal dining room, historic home, or museum-quality interior

With their remarkable craftsmanship, documented family signatures, and strong connection to English history, the Pitchford Hall Dining Chairs represent a rare opportunity for collectors and connoisseurs of antique kitchen and dining room chairs. Their elegant form, intricate detailing, and notable provenance make them highly desirable for both display and practical furnishing within traditional or historically inspired settings.
