Pair of Os de Mouton Ebonised Long Benches

Originating from France and inspired by the grandeur of the 17th century, this stylish pair of Os de Mouton Ebonised Long Benches effortlessly echo the elegance of period seating. Showcasing a refined, timeless style with S-shaped legs, these benches seamlessly fuse historic design with a modern sensibility.

Origin: France
Date: Late 19th–early 20th century
Material: Ebonised wood and cane

Dimensions: Height: 40 cm (15.7 ins), Width: 115 cm (45.3 ins), Depth: 53.5 cm (21 ins)

Condition: Superb overall with an attractive ebonised finish and minor signs of age to caning.

These long benches take their name, “Os de Mouton” (literally “sheep bone”), from the distinctive S-shaped curve of the legs—an iconic feature seen in Louis XIII furnishings. The ebonised finish adds a sophisticated depth, reminiscent of pieces found in distinguished French interiors and public collections. The caned seats hint at both luxury and lightness, reflecting a period when craftsmanship and comfort were paramount.

Notable Features:

  • Elegant caned seats offer both resilience and airiness, providing a versatile surface ideal for daily use or display.
  • Meticulously moulded stretchers and shapely S-legs mirror classic Os de Mouton linework, showcasing the bench’s period fidelity.
  • Ebonised finish lends a rich, dramatic tone, perfectly aligning with both contemporary and traditional décor.
  • The generous length and modern seat height make these benches a practical choice, whether at the foot of a bed, in a grand hallway, or as standout stools in a reception room.

A harmonious blend of historic design and practical form, this pair holds particular collecting value thanks to its versatile scale and enduring style. Rarely found in matched pairs, these benches are highly sought-after by interior designers and collectors alike, promising a statement piece for display or refined seating within any curated setting.
