Sheraton Mahogany Drum Table

A superb centre table epitomising late Georgian taste, this Sheraton mahogany drum table hails from England circa 1815. Crafted in the refined Sheraton style, it blends elegant design with practical functionality, embodying the aesthetic excellence of Regency accent tables.

Origin: England
Date: Circa 1815
Material: Mahogany with boxwood stringing, brass details, tooled leather top

Dimensions: Height: 74 cm (29 ins); Diameter: 112 cm (44 ins)

Condition: Excellent antique condition, presenting a fine patina with light, sympathetic restoration.

This Sheraton mahogany drum table is a classic example of early 19th-century English furniture, resonating with the restraint and grace typical of Thomas Sheraton’s design legacy. The Regency period witnessed a shift towards slender profiles and sophisticated ornamentation, clearly seen here in the use of crossbanded mahogany and delicate boxwood stringing. Comparable pieces reside in prominent museum collections, prized for their harmonious proportions and understated luxury.

Notable Features:

  • Superb craftsmanship evident in the finely tooled leather inset top, offering both visual appeal and tactile pleasure.
  • Decorative crossbanding and boxwood stringing highlight the table’s circumference, accentuating its elegant, circular silhouette.
  • Eight frieze drawer fronts surround the drum (including four functional drawers and four blanks), providing both symmetry and discreet storage.
  • The pedestal base, with gracefully outswept legs terminating in original brass castors, ensures both stability and effortless movement.

This centre table’s design significance lies in its refined Regency symmetry—noticeable in the balanced arrangement of drawers and the gentle sweep of its legs—while touches such as boxwood stringing subtly reference the Neoclassical motifs prevalent during the Georgian period. Far more than a decorative accent, the Sheraton mahogany drum table is a highly desirable antique, valued by collectors for its rarity, distinguished form, and versatility in modern settings.

Ideal as a statement piece for an elegant drawing room, study, or entrance hall, this accent table promises both historical charm and practical utility. Its generous surface is perfect for displaying objets d’art, books, or floral arrangements, whilst the concealed drawers offer convenient storage, making this Sheraton drum table an exceptional addition to any discerning collection of English Georgian antiques.
