Pioneers of Modern Design in Vienna

Founded in Vienna in 1849 by Jacob Kohn (1791–1866) and his son Josef Kohn (1814–1884), J. & J. Kohn quickly became one of the most influential furniture manufacturers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their innovative use of Austrian beech and mastery of bentwood techniques positioned them as rivals to the renowned Thonet Brothers, reshaping European furniture design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Innovation and Craftsmanship

The Kohn firm produced an extensive range of modern furniture — from chairs, stools, and coat racks to children’s doll furniture. Their designs were celebrated for their practicality, elegance, and technical sophistication. By harnessing the possibilities of bentwood, J. & J. Kohn pioneered new forms that balanced strength with graceful curves, helping to democratise stylish, functional furniture across Europe and beyond.

Collaboration with the Wiener Werkstätte

At the turn of the 20th century, J. & J. Kohn’s collaboration with the Wiener Werkstätte, co-founded by architect Josef Hoffmann, marked a high point in their creative output. This partnership produced distinctive furniture characterised by bentwood, cane, and upholstered designs that reflected the ideals of the Art Nouveau and early Modernist movements. Distributed widely through their expansive showroom network, these pieces became hallmarks of avant-garde Viennese design.

Mergers and Transformation

Following World War I, economic pressures and intense competition led to mergers with other manufacturers. By the early 1920s, J. & J. Kohn merged with the Mundus company, forming Mundus-Kohn, and shortly thereafter Thonet-Mundus. While the Thonet brand continued to expand and thrive post–World War II, the name J. & J. Kohn eventually disappeared from production.

Enduring Legacy

Today, J. & J. Kohn furniture remains highly collectable, prized for its craftsmanship, elegance, and historical importance. Iconic designs include bentwood wingback chairs by Josef Hoffmann, beech nesting tables, and a wide range of seating and side tables. These timeless creations continue to exemplify the artistry and innovation of one of Austria’s most important furniture makers.
