Early 20th century aesthetic movement staircase lantern, fashioned in cast and wrought iron, the large long drop lantern hung from eight support chains, has D ends and its lantern shaped ‘roof’ inset with coloured glass panels and supporting a basket of wrought iron flowers. Suspended from a central element inset with coloured glass and above a round canopy.

The lantern’s design is influenced by both the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements, which were contemporaneous with the Aesthetic Movement. The flowing lines and organic forms of the wrought ironwork are characteristic of Art Nouveau, a style that emphasised natural forms and intricate patterns. Meanwhile, the emphasis on handcrafted quality and the use of wrought iron align with the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, which championed traditional craftsmanship in response to industrialisation.
