DECCANI MUGHAL DAGGER

A distinguished example of late 18th-century Mughal craftsmanship, this Deccani Mughal Dagger epitomises the refined artistry and innovation of Indian armoury. Bearing hallmarks of the Mughal courts, it features the iconic ‘pistol grip’ hilt—a style that flourished under Emperor Aurangzeb’s reign and became favoured amongst nobles and dignitaries.

Origin: Mughal India, possibly Deccan
Date: Circa 1780
Material: Nephrite jade, silver, watered wootz steel, wood, steel, and cotton

Dimensions: (Please enquire for precise measurements)

Condition: Very well preserved; minor decolourisation to fabric sheath appropriate for age

Celebrated for its intricate design and impressive heritage, this collectible knife stands firmly within the legacy of Mughal arms housed in prominent museum collections. Closely comparable to the renowned examples in both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum, this dagger is set apart by its exceptional silver-inlaid nephrite jade hilt and expertly forged wootz steel blade. The work reflects a harmonious blend of opulence and functionality, deftly uniting Deccani Bidri inlay techniques with Mughal stylistic motifs.

Notable Features:

  • Exquisite silver foliate inlay set flush into polished jade hilt, with embedded rubies at the quillons and pommel
  • Classic ‘pistol grip’ hilt popularised in the late 1600s, synonymous with paintings of Mughal royalty
  • High-quality watered wootz steel blade, featuring dark polish and distinct floral etching at both the forte and tip
  • Rare, gently curved blade optimised for slashing, suited for left-waist wear
  • Original wooden sheath wrapped in black fabric, with two steel chapes—each etched with floral motifs; upper chape distinguished by a unique bird motif

Collecting and Practical Value:

This rare 18th-century Indian dagger’s unbroken provenance and original sheath elevate its desirability, positioning it as an outstanding example among collectible knives. The fusion of decorative excellence and practical design places it in high regard for connoisseurs of Mughal weaponry. The completeness of the piece, together with its superb decorative elements and craftsmanship, ensures it is remarkably suitable for display, collection focus, or specialist study.

A true masterpiece, this Deccani Mughal Dagger bridges the world of fine works of art and collectible knives, encapsulating the elegance and martial spirit of its era.
