Irish Regency Convex Mirror Signed Arthur Williams

A superb example of an Irish Regency convex mirror, this striking girandole is signed by the renowned craftsman Arthur Williams. Created during the Regency period in early 19th century Ireland, it epitomises the restrained elegance and classical refinement characteristic of the era.

Origin: Ireland, by Arthur Williams
Date: Circa 1815–1819
Material: Giltwood, ebonised wood, gilt bronze, glass

Dimensions: Height 158 cm (62 ins), Width 117 cm (46 ins), Depth 35 cm (14 ins)

Condition: Some restorations and re-gilding; glass has been replaced (original retained)

This Irish Regency mirror stands out both for its documented provenance and masterful craftsmanship. Produced at a time when Irish decorative arts flourished, this convex mirror is closely associated with Richard Jackson’s esteemed Looking Glass Warehouse in Dublin. Arthur Williams, the artisan, has connections to other significant examples, some held in museum collections and noted in specialist literature on Irish furniture. With provenance to the distinguished Prehen House in Co. Derry—a Grade A listed Georgian mansion—this piece has a heritage befitting any discerning collection.

Notable Features:

  • Finely carved giltwood and ebonised frame with rope-bound detailing
  • Circular convex plate set within a plain ebonised slip
  • Exquisite cresting featuring a majestic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching rocky base and holding beaded chains with tassels
  • Foliate scrolls terminating in lion mask finials and pendant acorns, richly symbolic of Regency taste
  • Four gilt bronze candle arms with glass bobeches and cut glass prisms, providing scintillating light play

The design is a testament to Regency values, expertly balancing classical allusions—such as oak leaves, flaming torches, and lions’ heads—with understated sophistication. The use of convex glass and bold yet harmonious proportions is typical of the finest period work, while the individually symbolic motifs echo ancient mythology and aristocratic values.

Collectors prize this Irish Regency convex mirror for its rarity, documented authorship, and grand scale. Signed Regency mirrors by named craftsmen from Dublin are exceedingly scarce and thus highly sought after. The piece’s early 19th-century provenance, association with leading makers, and splendid form make it a notable focal point for any interior or collection.

This antique convex mirror is not merely decorative—it is a tangible emblem of Ireland’s Regency period and a testament to its skilled artisans. Ideal for a statement display, it brings historical gravitas and timeless style to traditional or eclectic spaces alike.
