Bronze Hippo Antique Sculpture

A striking and substantial antique bronze sculpture, this captivating hippopotamus exudes both strength and serenity. Crafted in Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, its style is emblematic of the period’s fascination with naturalism and refined decorative arts.

Origin: Europe
Date: Circa 1900
Material: Patinated bronze, mounted on marble with carved giltwood gadrooned edges

Dimensions: Height: 21 cm (8.3 in), Width: 36 cm (14.2 in), Depth: 23 cm (9 in)

Condition: Excellent patina, minor, sympathetic restorations to the base

This bronze hippo antique sculpture recalls the rising popularity of animalier art in late nineteenth-century Europe, championed by celebrated makers such as Antoine-Louis Barye. Its detailed modelling and lifelike posture reflect the era’s admiration for both exotic wildlife and masterful metalwork, echoing pieces seen in notable art collections and period interiors. Mounted atop a luxurious marble plinth with richly carved giltwood edges, the sculpture aligns with objets d’art found in established museum collections.

Notable Features:

• Exceptional craftsmanship: finely cast in bronze with a naturalistic patina that beautifully highlights the hippo’s form
• Ornate base: mounted on veined marble with gadrooned giltwood decoration for an opulent finish
• Design significance: balances Edwardian naturalism with neoclassical flourishes in the mounting
• Collectable value: a rare subject matter in a substantial table-top size, appealing to discerning collectors and connoisseurs
• Versatility: ideal as a centrepiece for a desk, mantelpiece, or curated display of antique sculptures and statues

The sculptor’s attention to anatomical correctness and textural variation makes this bronze hippo antique sculpture a noteworthy work for collectors of animalier bronzes or those seeking an eye-catching accent within traditional or eclectic settings. Its distinguished presence and enduring materials ensure that it is not only a decorative object, but also a lasting acquisition well-suited for any serious collection of historic bronze sculptures and statues.
