Bronze Figure of Asclepius

A remarkable bronze sculpture from Italy, this 19th-century piece represents the revered Greek god Asclepius, master of healing and medicine, rendered in the Giustini-Neigebauer style. Drawing inspiration from Late Classical antiquity, the statue’s dignified presence melds Classical restraint with a timeless narrative of wellness.

Origin: Italy
Date: Circa 1850
Material: Bronze

Dimensions: Height: 32 cm (12.5 in); Width: 13 cm (5 in); Depth: 8 cm (3 in)

Condition: Excellent patina, very minor surface age commensurate with period.

This elegant bronze sculpture exemplifies the enduring fascination with classical mythology prevalent in 19th-century Italian art. Adapted after a Greek original dating from the 4th century BC, the figure is closely related to the renowned Roman model housed in the Uffizi galleries, Florence. This Asclepius is a testament to the Giustini-Neigebauer tradition, which carefully replicated ancient masterpieces for connoisseurs and collectors during the Grand Tour era.

Notable Features:

  • Superb casting: The rippling drapery and serene facial expression have been expertly modelled in bronze, showcasing the craftsman’s precision.
  • Symbolic iconography: Asclepius is displayed in flowing robes, holding the distinct staff entwined with a serpent—a hallmark of medicine still recognised worldwide.
  • Authentic style lineage: The Giustini-Neigebauer type references Late Classical archetypes, linking this bronze figure to museum-quality examples and privy collections alike.

The design imparts a sense of tranquil authority, harmonising thoughtful Neoclassical references with the soft curves and balanced stance reminiscent of ancient originals. Collectors will appreciate the precise proportions and measured expressions that bespeak both rarity and refined taste, making it an exceptional opportunity for acquisition.

This distinguished bronze sculpture is not only an object of beauty but holds particular value for enthusiasts focused on medical iconography or classical history. Commanding yet unobtrusive in scale, it offers versatile appeal—equally suitable as a statement piece in a display cabinet, the centrepiece of a desk, or as a crucial highlight in any discerning collection dedicated to sculptures and statues.
