Arts and Crafts Gothic Revival Etagere

A striking example of late nineteenth-century British craftsmanship, this Arts and Crafts Gothic Revival etagere embodies both aesthetic purity and artisanal skill. Hand-made in England, this oak display table reflects the era’s devotion to honest materials and original design, harmoniously blending Gothic motifs with Arts and Crafts principles.

Origin: England
Date: Circa 1900
Material: Oak

Dimensions: Height: 77 cm (30 in); Width: 72 cm (28.5 in); Depth: 33 cm (13 in)

Condition: Excellent patina; projecting dowels are a purposeful design feature; inscribed with makers’ initials in Gothic script.

The etagere’s design directly draws inspiration from both medieval Gothic architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement’s celebration of visible construction and integrity of form. Distinctively English, this piece is signed with the Gothic-script initials ‘BS’ and ‘GL’, aligning it with a tradition of identifiable, hand-crafted furniture. Similar designs may be seen in collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, representing the era’s shift from mass production towards limited, artist-signed editions.

Notable Features:

  • Exceptional Craftsmanship: Exposed dowelled joints are boldly projected, transforming functional elements into decorative highlights—true to the Arts and Crafts ethos.
  • Gothic Design Language: Characteristic verticality and pointed detailing offer strong nods to the gothic style, leading to a dramatic yet harmonious presence.
  • Collectors’ Value: Its signed provenance, original handmade construction, and rare form significantly enhance desirability for collectors of Arts and Crafts or Gothic Revival furniture.
  • Versatile Practicality: Equally suitable as a display etagere, end table, or to house treasured books; ideal for traditional interiors or as a statement piece in contemporary spaces.

With its combination of striking period style, expert joinery, and expressive detailing, this English antique effortlessly bridges the practical and the beautiful. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal and collectible value of original Arts and Crafts furniture, making it a distinguished addition to any discerning collection or interior scheme.
