Andrea Riccio

This fine Renaissance-style bronze sculpture is a faithful reproduction of a lucerne, or oil lamp, adorned with a satyr’s head and cock’s foot. It artfully encapsulates the playful classicism and technical mastery associated with the Italian Renaissance period.

Origin: Italy
Date: Circa 1850
Material: Bronze

Dimensions: Height: 22 cm (8.7 ins), Width: 12.5 cm (5 ins), Depth: 14 cm (5.5 ins)

Condition: Excellent patina, minor age-appropriate wear

Crafted after the celebrated Andrea Riccio (c. 1470–1532), this sculpture draws upon the master’s distinctive approach to small-scale bronze works. Riccio, known both as Andrea Briosco and Il Riccio (“curly”), stands among the most significant exponents of practical Renaissance bronzes. His creations, admired in renowned museums and private collections, often combine utility with exceptional artistry – a tradition continued in this refined piece.

Notable Features:

  • Superb bronze casting captures intricate classical detailing, particularly the expressive satyr’s head and elegant cock’s foot, hallmarks of Riccio’s oeuvre.
  • Exemplifies Renaissance design with its harmonious balance of naturalistic and mythological motifs, echoing the curves and decorative exuberance found in masterworks of the period.
  • Collectible both for its aesthetic value and its connection to a distinguished Renaissance sculptor, this bronze lucerne is a scarce and desirable addition to any art collection.
  • Perfectly sized for prominent display, it suits a wide range of interiors, offering historic flair whether showcased individually or within a broader assemblage of antique sculptures and statues.

Collectors of bronze sculpture and aficionados of Renaissance art will appreciate the exquisite balance of style and substance in this oil lamp. With remarkable attention to detail and a nod to Andrea Riccio’s lasting influence, it presents both historical significance and enduring decorative appeal.
