Fijian Lobed Ula Throwing Club

A powerful and elegant example of Oceanic weaponry, this lobed tribal Fijian Ula Throwing Club embodies the artistry, identity, and martial traditions of 18th–19th century Fiji. Slightly larger than the standard form, this piece reflects the dual role of the ula—as both a practical weapon of war and a symbolic object of rank and prestige.

Origin: Fiji
Date: Circa 1750–1800
Material: Hardwood
Dimensions: Height: 43 cm (17 in), Diameter: 9 cm (3.5 in)
Condition: Excellent patina with age-related wear; original incised decoration to the handle remains clearly visible.

Notable Features

Lobed Head

  • This example is distinguished by its bold lobed head, comprising rounded bulbous forms around a central core.

  • The lobes are larger and more pronounced than usual, giving the weapon additional heft and visual impact.

Incised Handle

  • The handle is finely decorated with zigzag and geometric incisions, adding both grip and ornamentation.

  • The carving reflects the high level of skill typical of Fijian craftsmen, ensuring both functionality and beauty.

Patina and Condition

  • The surface shows a deep, rich patina, attesting to its age and long history of use.

  • The wood retains excellent density, with only minor wear consistent with ritual or combat handling.
