Rococo Ormolu | Malachite Table

This resplendent centre table epitomises the Rococo style’s penchant for exuberant decoration and elegant curves, whilst prominently featuring the natural splendour of malachite. Hailing from mid-19th-century France, it is a quintessential example of the interplay between opulent materials and refined artisanship.

Origin: France
Date: Circa 1865
Material: Polished and gilt bronze (ormolu), malachite

Dimensions: Height: 76 cm; Width: 47 cm; Depth: 47 cm

Condition: Retains excellent patina; minor, sympathetic restorations

This malachite table stands as a testament to the late 19th century’s fascination with exotic materials and ornate design. Rococo furniture from this period is celebrated for its asymmetry, fluid lines, and elaborate ornamentation—qualities masterfully realised in this example. Comparable pieces can be found gracing the decorative arts collections of major European museums, reflecting both the style’s enduring allure and the superb craftsmanship employed in its creation.

Notable Features:

  • Superb hand-chased ormolu adorned with scrolling ‘C’ motifs and finely detailed acanthus leaves
  • Rich malachite top, exquisitely patterned and bordered by an intricately sculpted rim
  • Three elegantly contoured legs converging into a central column, embodying true Rococo exuberance

The design significance of this accent table is clear in its whimsical yet sophisticated silhouette, exemplifying the playful curves and ornamental richness characteristic of Rococo furnishings. The lavish use of ormolu combined with the arresting green malachite evoke both Russian and French decorative traditions, making it highly desirable for connoisseurs and collectors alike.

With its singular malachite surface and intricately gilded bronze, this 19th-century ormolu table possesses considerable collecting value. Its rarity, combined with an elegant scale well-suited to both display and function, ensures its position as a focal point within any refined interior. This centre table will serve equally as an anchor for a decorative scheme or a highlight within a curated assortment of period accent tables.
