Large-scale French Circular Brass Lantern – Chandeliers

A striking example of late 19th-century French lighting, this large-scale circular brass lantern epitomises the opulent decorative style popular during the Belle Époque. Embodying a blend of practicality and artistry, it elegantly bridges the transition between lavish 19th-century interiors and the refinement of modern design.

Origin: France
Date: Circa 1870
Material: Burnished brass and lacquered metal
Dimensions: Height: 81.5 cm (32 in), Diameter: 40 cm (15.75 in)
Condition: Superb original patina with minimal sympathetic restoration

Resonating with the grandeur of French design, this chandelier recalls similar lanterns housed in distinguished collections such as the Musée d’Orsay and the V&A. The distinctive cylindrical form and impressive scale were much sought after in Parisian hôtels particuliers and grand townhouses. The swan neck ‘S’ scroll supports are reminiscent of the elegant metalwork championed by celebrated Parisian ateliers of the era, such as Maison Baguès.

Notable Features:

  • Superb craftsmanship is evident in the precisely burnished brass framework and finely lacquered finish, resulting in a warm, lustrous glow.
  • The four swan neck ‘S’ scroll supports, forming a decorative canopy, exemplify the influence of Rococo curves, lending both grace and robust support to the piece.
  • Fitted with a four-light electrified chandelier behind curved glazed panels, the lantern offers both historical authenticity and modern functionality.
  • Its generous proportions and rare cylindrical design make it a highly desirable centrepiece for serious chandelier collectors and those wishing to bring a touch of French sophistication to their interiors.

The rarity of this form and scale, coupled with its distinguished provenance and exquisite design, underscore this lantern’s collecting value. Whether suspended in a stately entrance hall, above a dining table, or as the focal point of a refined living space, this large-scale circular brass lantern promises to infuse any setting with timeless elegance and enduring style.
