Tatham visited Rome in July 1794, staying for two years in order to gather material for his designs of ancient ornamental architecture. The original stool design is based on a marble seat Tatham saw in Rome. He studied under his mentor, Henry Holland, and collected antique fragments and sculptures which are now displayed in the Soane museum in London.
