George III Irish Demi Lune Card Table

A superb example of late 18th-century craftsmanship, this George III Irish demi lune card table is an exceptional piece within the canon of period accent tables. Crafted in Ireland around 1780 and attributed to Moore of Dublin, it captures the refined elegance of the Georgian era, blending native woods in a distinctly sophisticated style.

Origin: Ireland, attributed to Moore of Dublin
Date: Circa 1780
Material: Harewood and satinwood, with burr yew and rosewood cross banding

Dimensions: Height: 75 cm (29.5 in); Width: 105 cm (41.5 in); Depth: 46 cm (18 in)

Condition: Excellent patina; minor sympathetic restorations commensurate with age

This demi lune card table stands as a testament to the artistry of Moore of Dublin, one of Ireland’s preeminent cabinetmakers. Its elegantly proportioned design echoes pieces held in notable museum collections, and it closely compares in quality and style with works produced for some of the period’s most distinguished Irish households. The use of contrasting veneers, meticulous marquetry and the classical detailing situate this accent table firmly within the refined traditions of George III furniture.

Notable Features:

  • Exquisite craftsmanship is evident in the satinwood fan inlay and carefully selected burr yew and rosewood cross banding, creating a striking visual contrast on the D-shaped top.
  • Classical paterae adorn the harewood-veneered frieze, reflecting the influence of Neoclassical motifs so favoured during the period.
  • Designed with both form and function in mind, the green baize-lined interior is revealed as the top opens, offering a practical yet elegant space for cards or games.
  • The rhomboid-shaped back legs and the overall symmetry attest to a high degree of skill and aesthetic sensibility.

Collectors will appreciate the rarity of Irish George III accent tables with such well-preserved veneer work and distinguished attribution. This demi lune card table’s elegant scale makes it ideal for display in a drawing room, as a console table in a hallway or as a focal point within a curated collection of antique furniture. Coveted for its history, provenance, and design significance, it represents a timeless investment in period style and Irish craftsmanship.
