A very fine late 19th-century Japanese tusk vase and cover, the surface is profusely decorated with (carved mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, abalone shell) birds and insects among flowering tree branches, decorated in the round with further scenes of geese in flight above a stream with fish. The lid amusingly fitted with two carved mushrooms, one of which is signed. Japan, circa 1870 - Meiji Period
