Chinese Chippendale furniture was created by English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century. A Chinese-inspired design, this furniture was adorned with intricate carvings, ornate fretwork, and bold lacquer finishes. Often made of mahogany, these pieces had a more formal, symmetrical look than other styles of the time. The oriental style has been popular in England, Europe, and America for centuries, and it remains in high demand today. Chippendale's Chinese furniture featured pediments with pagoda-style decorations, fretwork, and intricately carved legs. Additionally, this same fretwork was used to create pierced galleries around the edges of china or tea tables. The combination of these elements led to the distinctive aesthetic that we now know as Chinese Chippendale.
