Early 18th Century Dutch Delft Blue and White Vase Mounted as a Table Lamp

An early eighteenth century Dutch Delft blue and white vase, now mounted as a table lamp, of elegant ovoid form with gently tapering neck and spreading foot. The surface is decorated in cobalt blue with chinoiserie figures within an imagined landscape, accompanied by stylised rockwork, pagodas, parasols, and scrolling ornamental borders, all painted upon a soft tin-glazed ground.

Produced during the great flowering of Dutch Delftware in the early eighteenth century, the vase reflects the profound European fascination with imported Chinese porcelain and the emergence of Delft as one of Europe’s most sophisticated ceramic centres. The painterly decoration possesses the spontaneity and charm characteristic of the finest Delft workshops, where Eastern motifs were reinterpreted through a distinctly Dutch decorative language.

Now mounted as a lamp, the vase acquires a renewed architectural presence, the blue and white decoration sitting beautifully beneath a pleated silk shade. The softly irregular glaze, subtle firing variations, and gentle wear accumulated over three centuries lend the piece remarkable warmth and authenticity, qualities impossible to replicate in later reproductions.
