A fine late 18th Century George III satinwood and silk backed needlework fire screen in the manner of Thomas Sheraton. Exceptionally rare to retain the original silk which is conserved behind glass.
England, Circa 1800

Fire screens served a dual purpose in the well-appointed Georgian drawing room or parlor. Functionally, they protected individuals from the direct heat of the fireplace, shielding delicate complexions from the intense warmth and preventing discomfort. Aesthetically, fire screens provided an opportunity to introduce an additional element of artistry and luxury into the room’s decor. This particular screen, with its shield shape and elegant proportions, would have complemented the room’s interior design, enhancing the overall harmony and sophistication of the space.
